Citizens of non-EU countries who are not entitled to enter under a visa-free regime and do not hold any other document authorizing entry into the EU (such as a a residence card) are required to obtain a visa. A Polish visa confirms the consent of the Polish authorities for a specific individual to enter and stay in Poland.
A foreign national intending to stay in Poland for more than three months may apply for a temporary residence permit, which can be granted for up to three years. The purpose of stay may include university studies, family reunification, residence with a Polish citizen, business activity, or other legally recognised grounds.
A permanent residence permit entitles a foreign national to reside in Poland for an indefinite period. It remains valid as long as they maintain residence in Poland and grants the right to live and work in the country. To obtain a permanent residence permit in Poland, a foreign national must meet special requirements, including continuous residence in Poland, financial self-sufficiency, and good conduct.
A temporary residence and work permit is a type of temporary residence permit issued for the purpose of employment in Poland. It combines the right to reside in Poland and the right to work, subject to the conditions specified in the administrative decision.
The long-term EU resident’s residence permit grants the right to permanent residence in Poland. The decision is issued for an indefinite period. This permit also allows the holder to work in Poland without the need for any additional authorisation.
A foreign national may be granted Polish citizenship, provided they meet specific requirements, including demonstrating knowledge of the Polish language at a minimum B1 level.
The Pole’s Card is a document confirming a foreign national’s affiliation with Polish nation. It is not tantamount to Polish citizenship, nor does it grant the right to temporary or permanent residence in Poland, or visa-free entry into Poland.
An apostille certifies the official status of a domestic document intended for use abroad. It confirms the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document acted, and the identity of the seal or stamp affixed to the document.
If a foreign national is granted a residence permit in Poland, they will receive a residence card as proof of their right to stay in the country.
The PESEL number is a unique personal identifier assigned within the Universal Electronic Population Registration System – a national registry that records population data. It serves to identify individuals and is used in interactions with public institutions, such as government offices, hospitals, schools, or courts.
A foreign national who holds a driving licence issued abroad and has been residing in Poland for at least 185 days is required to exchange it for a Polish driving licence.
A work permit is a document that authorises a foreign national to work legally in Poland, provided they hold a valid residence status that permits employment under applicable regulations.
This document, together with a residence title (e.g. visa), enables foreign nationals from designated countries to be employed in Poland. Under this simplified procedure, for a maximum six months within any twelve-month period.
